Mansehra: Religious scholars from different schools of thought threatened street protests over the failure to arrest the person accused of killing a 19 year old female seminary student in Mansehra, nearly a week after the attack.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, JUI-F leader Mufti Kifayatullah said the incident had created fear and insecurity among parents and demanded the immediate arrest of the suspect.
He was accompanied by former provincial minister Syed Ahmad Hussain Shah, district Seerat Committee patron in chief Maulana Saeed Abdullah, and district peace committee chairperson Maulana Inayatur Rehman.
The clerics said a delegation also met the district police officer to call for the arrest of the person responsible.
The case dates back to September 29, when the student was returning home with other students from Jamia Fatimatu Zohra in the Lambi Dehri area of Mansehra.
According to police and the FIR lodged by her father, an assailant attacked the student near her home. She was seriously injured and taken to King Abdullah Teaching Hospital in Mansehra, where she died the following day.
Her father told police that her classmates witnessed the incident and could identify the attacker. He added that the family was not at enmity with anyone.
Following the student's death, religious scholars from different schools of thought condemned the attack and urged the police to improve security for female seminary students.
At Sunday's press conference, Mufti Kifayatullah described the attack as an act of terrorism and said the lack of an arrest had heightened concerns among families of daughters attending seminaries.
The clerics warned they would take to the streets if police did not arrest the person responsible, increasing pressure on the police as the investigation continues.
