Hollywood: Taylor Swift has officially surpassed Beyoncé to become the most decorated artist in MTV Video Music Awards history. The 36 year old pop icon secured the top accolade for Video of the Year alongside the inaugural Artist Director Honours, using her moment on stage to pay tribute to the late country legend Dolly Parton. Meanwhile, Madonna scooped Artist of the Year following a show opening medley, and grunge pioneers Nirvana were honoured with the prestigious Video Vanguard award.

Entering the evening tied with Beyoncé on 30 Moonman statuettes, the 36 year old broke the record after being awarded the inaugural Artist Director Honours for her behind the camera work on The Fate of Ophelia. Swift also claimed the coveted Video of the Year award for the same visual release, in addition to winning Best Direction for Opalite.
Upon accepting her directing accolade, Swift dedicated the moment to the late country music icon Dolly Parton, praising the legendary singer songwriter’s vivid narrative gift and enduring influence.
"I think we were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time. Every single song she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid. She handled this fame with such grace and love and gratitude."
Swift also leveraged the high profile ceremony to premiere the music video for her new single, Patient Zero. The video stars actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson alongside Swift, who delivers a stark warning about a past toxic relationship: "If he’s killing you / I got you / I was patient zero."
Despite Swift's record breaking tally, the evening’s primary title of Artist of the Year went to Madonna. The 68 year old pop icon opened the ceremony with a performance alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, marking her first live performance on the VMAs stage since her famous 2003 appearance alongside Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Madonna and Carpenter also took home the prize for Best Collaboration for Bring Your Love. Reflecting on her decades long history with the awards show, Madonna recalled her manager's reaction to an infamous performance fumble at the very first MTV awards: "My manager said my career was over," Madonna quipped to the audience, adding with a smile that "he isn’t my manager anymore."
Hosted by rapper Snoop Dogg, the broadcast aired across CBS and MTV networks, delivering a night dominated by historic milestones and star studded tributes.
