Toronto: Three Pakistani films received awards at the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival (MISAFF) 2026, with productions by Sarmad Khoosat, Mohammed Ali Naqvi and Kamran Faiq recognised across five categories.
Sarmad Khoosat’s Lali won the Special Jury Prize, while Farazeh Syed won Best Supporting Actress, and the film also won Best Sound Design. The Punjabi language film, starring Mamya Shajaffar and Channan Hanif, follows a couple whose marriage is shaped by superstition and family pressures. Lali had earlier premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s Hanging By A Wire received the Sabeen Mahmud Award for Courage in Cinema. The documentary follows the rescue of eight people, including six schoolboys, after a cable car malfunction in northern Pakistan. The film premiered at Sundance and later screened at Tribeca and other festivals. It has also been selected as Pakistan’s official submission for the 2027 Academy Awards, becoming the country’s first documentary submitted for Best International Feature Film.
Kamran Faiq’s The Last Glance won Best International Short Film at MISAFF. Publicly available information about its previous festival achievements and cast remains limited.
Among other winners, Nepal’s Elephants in the Fog, directed by Abinash Bikram Shah, won Best Feature, Best Director and Best Editing. The film had earlier won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and received three Asia Pacific Screen Awards nominations.
Bangladesh’s Roid, directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon, received Best Cinematography and Best Music. The film had previously competed in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
Naseeruddin Shah received Best Performer for Gurvinder Singh’s Indian film Rehmat, which follows interconnected stories set in Punjab.
Bangladesh’s Roid won Best Cinematography and Best Music, while Naseeruddin Shah won Best Performer for the Indian film Rehmat.
