Islamabad: Pakistan will observe Defence and Martyrs Day on Sunday to honour the nation’s martyrs and Ghazis and reaffirm its resolve to defend the homeland against all external and internal threats.

The national day commemorates the events of 1965, when Indian forces crossed the international border under the cover of darkness and launched an attack on Pakistan. The Pakistan Armed Forces, backed by the nation, successfully repelled the offensive and thwarted the enemy’s objectives.

Commemorative activities across the country will begin at dawn with ceremonial gun salutes. A 31-gun salute will be fired in the federal capital, Islamabad, while 21-gun salutes will be conducted in all provincial capitals.

Following Fajr prayers, special congregations will be held at mosques across the country. Prayers will be offered for Pakistan’s progress, stability, and prosperity, as well as for the freedom of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

State broadcaster Radio Pakistan will air special programmes throughout the day, including documentaries, interviews, and special features highlighting the sacrifices of the country’s martyrs and paying tribute to its defenders.

As part of the ongoing commemorations, educational institutions in Peshawar have also been hosting a series of events under the auspices of the Pakistan Army. Students participated in national song, tableau, and speech competitions, paying tribute to the martyrs of the Pakistan Army and expressing their patriotism and commitment to the country.
