Karachi: Two sisters were allegedly shot dead by their brother at their home in Karachi's Drigh Road area on Wednesday, with police investigating whether a dispute over their use of TikTok led to the killings. The victims, identified as Sobia, 25, and Hira, 20, were killed inside their residence in New Rehmanabad, an area falling under the jurisdiction of Shah Faisal Colony police.
Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fida Husain Janwari said the suspect, identified as Rehan, had allegedly warned his sisters against using the social media platform. According to the officer, preliminary investigations suggest that the disagreement over TikTok may have been a motive behind the killings. Police have not yet established the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The suspect fled the scene following the incident, and police have launched efforts to locate and arrest him. Janwari said Rehan had previously been arrested in connection with criminal cases and had served time in prison. The bodies of both women were shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico legal formalities.
Social media use under investigation as possible motive
The killings have raised questions about violence against women linked to restrictions imposed on their personal choices, including their use of digital platforms. However, investigators have yet to establish whether the dispute over TikTok was the sole motive or whether other circumstances contributed to the incident.
Police have described the suspected motive as a preliminary finding, and the allegations against Rehan remain subject to investigation. The case also draws attention to the risks women can face when disagreements over their online activities become sources of conflict within households. Further details about the investigation, including any formal charges against the suspect, have not yet been announced.
