Gujranwala: The main suspect in the murder of a newlywed woman in Gujranwala was killed in an alleged encounter with the Crime Control Department (CCD) on Saturday, days after the woman was attacked on her way back from her wedding reception.
The suspect was accused of murdering Saba after her family rejected his marriage proposal.
According to CCD officials, Sarfraz died in an exchange of fire between police and armed suspects. The department said his own accomplices shot him.
The police’s account of the encounter was not independently confirmed.
Conflicting accounts emerge over encounter
According to reports, four men on two motorcycles allegedly opened fire on CCD personnel near Madu Khalil Road in Gujranwala.
Police said one suspect was injured during the exchange, while three others escaped. The injured man was later identified as the suspect in the Gujranwala bride case and died while being taken to hospital.
Reports said CCD personnel arrested the suspect and his accomplices in another province and were transporting them to Gujranwala when armed associates attacked the police party.
CCD officials also claimed that the suspect travelled to Karachi and attempted to hide in Balochistan after the murder.
The latest development brings the search for the principal suspect to an end, although questions remain about the circumstances of his death and the alleged involvement of other suspects.
