Karachi: The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) arrested a man accused of obtaining Rs 4.45 million from a woman he met through a matrimonial application, allegedly using false promises of marriage before attempting to blackmail her.
The suspect was arrested on Friday following a complaint filed by the woman, who alleged that he gained her confidence through an online relationship and persuaded her to transfer money into his bank accounts.
According to investigators, the man allegedly presented himself as a prospective marriage partner and promised that the couple would move to the United States after their wedding.
Marriage promises allegedly used to obtain money
The NCCIA reported that the suspect allegedly used the name Hassam Uddin on the matrimonial platform.
Investigators said he contacted the complainant, built a relationship, and repeatedly requested money under various pretexts.
The woman allegedly transferred about Rs 4.45 million via online banking after being assured they would marry.
Suspect accused of blackmailing woman
According to the NCCIA, the suspect allegedly began threatening the woman after receiving the money, demanding additional payments.
The agency said he threatened to circulate digitally manipulated photographs of the complainant on social media platforms.
The allegations prompted the woman to approach cybercrime authorities, who launched an investigation and arrested the suspect.
Court grants six day physical remand
A judicial magistrate in Karachi granted the NCCIA a six day physical remand for further investigation.
The NCCIA registered First Information Report (FIR) No. 117/2026 under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA), 2016.
Investigators suspect more women were targeted
Authorities believe additional complainants may not report their experiences because of privacy concerns and social pressure.
The NCCIA urged other potential victims to come forward, assuring them that their identities and personal information will remain confidential.
The agency also advised the public to exercise caution when interacting with unfamiliar individuals on matrimonial applications and social media.
The allegations are still under investigation, and the suspect is still to be convicted yet.
