Lahore: Authorities in Lahore fined 1763 smoke emitting vehicles and imposed penalties totalling Rs 5.5 million in October as part of an enforcement campaign to reduce air pollution.
The figures were presented at a meeting chaired by Lahore Commissioner Nauman Yousuf, during which officials reviewed actions taken against vehicles, industries, restaurants and agricultural activities contributing to pollution.
According to the report published on Saturday, authorities also impounded 739 vehicles during the month and took action against overloaded vehicles.
Industrial units and restaurants sealed
The crackdown extended beyond vehicle emissions, with inspection teams examining 2,018 industrial units throughout the Lahore division.
Following the inspections, authorities sealed 41 industrial units and 146 restaurants for pollution related violations.
The enforcement measures were part of wider efforts to address sources of air pollution across the division.
Eight cases registered over crop residue burning
Authorities also conducted enforcement operations at 49 locations across the Lahore division to address agricultural residue burning.
The operations resulted in eight first information reports (FIRs) being registered and fines totalling Rs 240000.
Burning crop residues releases smoke and fine particles into the atmosphere, contributing to poor air quality, particularly when weather conditions prevent pollutants from dispersing.
Lahore steps up pollution enforcement
The latest figures show enforcement action targeting several pollution sources, including vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, and agricultural burning.
Lahore faces recurring air quality problems during the colder months, when weather conditions can trap pollutants near the ground.
The authorities' latest report outlines the scale of penalties and inspections carried out in October, but it does not provide measurements showing how much these actions reduced pollution levels.
The campaign remains focused on identifying violations and enforcing environmental regulations throughout Lahore division.
