Lisbon: Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension of between one and six months after disciplinary proceedings were reportedly initiated against him under Portuguese football regulations.
According to media reports, Ronaldo left Portugal's national team camp following a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus, prompting the Portuguese Football Federation to begin disciplinary action over his alleged misconduct.
Reports suggest the 40 year old could face a ban of up to six months, although the final decision will be made by the disciplinary council.
If the suspension lasts longer than a month, Ronaldo could miss Portugal’s Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales next month.
In a statement, Ronaldo apologised to his international teammates and the Portuguese public, acknowledging that leaving the camp was a mistake.
He said he had been disappointed by the coach's failure to honour a promise but accepted that his actions should have consequences and that the rules must apply equally to everyone.
Ronaldo has made a record 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals for his country.
