Shanghai: Daniil Medvedev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6 to 4, 7 to 5 on Wednesday to reach the Shanghai Masters quarter finals, setting up a meeting with American Tommy Paul.
The fifth seed did not face a single break point during the match, which lasted one hour and 24 minutes.
After taking the opening set, Medvedev broke Tsitsipas to lead 6 to 5 in the second before serving out the victory.
The result gave the Russian his 11th win in 16 tour meetings against the Greek. Medvedev, ranked sixth in the world, won the Shanghai title in 2019.
Medvedev said he played well and put Tsitsipas under pressure in the opening set, while describing the second as a much tighter contest. He said improved returns helped him find his rhythm.
Paul secured his place by beating Belgium’s Zizou Bergs 7 to 6, 6 to 4, winning the opening set tiebreak 7 to 5.
Bergs had eliminated second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round. Against Paul, he recovered from 0 to 4 in the second set to move within one game, but the American held on.
Spain’s Rafael Jodar came from behind to defeat Botic van de Zandschulp 6 to 7, 6 to 4, 6 to 2. Jodar received a code violation during the second set for swearing at a ball boy while requesting a towel.
He will face Norway’s Casper Ruud, who advanced after fourth seed Felix Auger Aliassime retired while trailing 2 to 5 in the opening set.
Auger Aliassime took a medical timeout after the fifth game and returned with strapping around his left knee.
Ruud said the Canadian appeared to hurt himself after an awkward step during the fourth game and seemed to be in considerable pain afterwards.
