London: Mikel Oyarzabal proved to be England’s nemesis once again, scoring 16 minutes from time to hand world champions Spain a thrilling 3-2 victory at Wembley Stadium in Nations League Group A3.
The match got off to a dramatic start inside two minutes when England defender Marc Guéhi misplayed a blind pass across his own box. Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal pounced on the interception, calmly slotting into the bottom corner to put the visitors ahead.
Despite Spain dominating early possession, England staged a quick comeback late in the first half. Jude Bellingham set up Anthony Gordon for a crisp finish before captain Harry Kane headed home a delicate chip from Nico O'Reilly five minutes before the interval to turn the match on its head.
The turning point came ten minutes into the second half. Following a VAR review, Rodri was penalised for bringing down Bellingham in the area. However, Harry Kane slipped during his run up, sending his spot kick crashing off the crossbar.
I thought it was a great game to watch and play in... but in a game like that, mistakes cost you." Anthony Gordon, England forward
England were made to pay for their missed opportunity and subsequent defensive lapses. An giveaway by O'Reilly allowed Dani Olmo to set up Álex Baena for a sublime finish to level the score. In the 74th minute, Oyarzabal who famously scored Spain's winner against England in the European Championship final dinked the ball over James Trafford after linking up with Baena to seal victory.
The win extended Spain’s remarkable unbeaten run to 39 matches, with coach Luis de la Fuente praising his side's adaptability: "There were moments where we had to suffer, but we've seen a Spain which is reinventing itself."
In Prague, 41 year old Croatian captain Luka Modrić put on another ageless display, opening the scoring shortly after half time in Croatia’s 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. Although Adam Karabec equalised seven minutes later, substitute Mario Pašalić struck 13 minutes from time to secure all three points for the visitors.
