Karachi: Sahibzada Farhan has indicated a keen desire to retain the Pakistan T20 captaincy beyond the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, signaling his readiness for a permanent leadership role as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) evaluates its long term strategy.
Speaking to reporters during Pakistan’s pre departure training camp at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, the 30 year old top order batter described leading the national side as a "proud moment" and confirmed he would gladly accept a longer tenure if invited by selectors. While head coach Mike Hesson clarified that the current appointment is primarily aimed at giving Farhan valuable leadership experience, media reports suggest the PCB is considering him as a central figure in a restructured, younger T20 setup.
Pakistan enter the 10 team T20 competition directly at the quarter final stage, featuring a blend of experienced international performers and fresh talent. The 15 man squad reflects the PCB's push towards developing a youthful core, featuring four uncapped T20I players Akif Javed, Ali Raza, Maaz Sadaqat, and Saad Masood with Abdul Samad appointed as vice captain.
Farhan dismissed concerns regarding squad inexperience or potential pressure surrounding a prospective clash with arch rivals India, emphasising a disciplined, match by match approach. To adapt to the anticipated slow surfaces in Japan, the team management requested tailored practice pitches and conducted scenario based simulation matches during their four day camp in Karachi.
"Whether I am captain or a player, I will have the same mindset and play according to what T20 cricket requires. Senior or junior does not matter—the players who perform are the ones who make the team."— Sahibzada Farhan, Pakistan T20 Captain
The national contingent departed for Japan on Thursday evening, with their opening match set for 28 September.
