Nagoya: Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fourth in the men’s javelin final at the Asian Games on Monday, missing a medal despite recording his best throw of the season. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage won gold with 88.55m at a rain affected competition in Japan.
Arshad reached 80.29m on his third attempt after opening with 76.69m and fouling on his second. His final three throws were also fouls, leaving him short of the podium. India’s Yashvir Singh took silver with 85.72m, while Rohit Yadav secured bronze with 84.35m. Pakistan’s Mohammad Yasir finished ninth with 73.50m.
The result extends a difficult season for Arshad. He finished ninth at the Commonwealth Games and fifth at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. His 80.29m effort in Nagoya was well below the 92.97m throw that won him Olympic gold in Paris.
Pathirage, meanwhile, moved into the lead with 88.33m on his fourth attempt before improving to 88.55m with his final throw.
