Islamabad: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Sunday said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had withdrawn from security commitments during the final phase of negotiations with the federal government.
In a post on X, Naqvi said the provincial government had agreed to sign a written agreement covering security and counterterrorism measures and submit an implementation plan within 72 hours.
According to the interior minister, the KP government had also agreed to reconsider the Police Act 2026 in view of the security situation and measures aimed at keeping security matters separate from political interference.
Naqvi said the provincial government had agreed to take steps to prevent militant groups from operating or establishing safe havens in the province, but later withdrew from the commitments during the final stage of the talks.
Negotiations between the government and the opposition failed to produce an agreement ahead of PTI’s planned march to Islamabad. Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah also said differences over counterterrorism cooperation remained central to the negotiations.
The federal government has said it remains open to further talks if the PTI and KP government agree to cooperate on counterterrorism measures. No date has been set for another round of negotiations.
