Karachi: A man who allegedly threw acid on a 35 year old woman in Gizri was arrested from his native town of Rajanpur in Punjab, according to police. South Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza said on Saturday that the alleged attacker was arrested with the help of Sindh police. Raza added that he had previously sought permission to send a police team to Rajanpur and bring the suspect back to Karachi.

According to police doctors, the 35 year old woman suffered burns an 15 percent of her body when the acid was thrown at her on Thursday. She was moved to the Burns Centre at Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi in an Edhi ambulance for treatment. The victim worked at a bungalow in Clifton and was returning home when the suspect allegedly attacked her.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar took notice of the incident and had sought an immediate and had directed police to use all available resources to ensure the immediate arrest of the suspect and take legal action to bring him to justice.

Earlier this year the Supreme Court noted that acid attacks should be considered more heinous than homicide, describing them as crimes that condemn victims to a “living death”.
