Los Angeles: Street Fighter, the film adaptation of the fighting video game franchise, has generated USD 4 million from Thursday preview screenings ahead of its opening weekend.
The film, directed by Kitao Sakurai, was co financed by Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment with a reported production budget of USD 82 million.
Industry projections indicate that the film could earn approximately USD 35 million during its first weekend at the domestic box office.
The projected opening would account for around 43 percent of the film's reported production expenditure, although box office receipts are shared with cinema operators and do not represent studio revenue in full.
The production is based on Capcom's Street Fighter franchise, which began in 1987 and has since expanded through sequels, international tournaments and adaptations across film and television.
The franchise centres on fighters from different countries competing in combat tournaments, with characters and storylines developed across successive game releases.
The film represents another attempt to bring the gaming property to cinemas following the 1994 adaptation starring Jean Claude Van Damme and the 2009 release Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li.
Its commercial performance will depend on ticket sales during the opening weekend and subsequent theatrical screenings, including international markets.
The reported USD 35 million projection remains an estimate, with actual opening weekend earnings yet to be confirmed.
