Riyadh: The Saudi led coalition of armed forces in Yemen said early on Saturday that it had intercepted ballistic missiles and drone attacks launched from Houthi territory towards Saudi Arabia.
According to the coalition, the missiles were aimed at the southwestern city of Khamis Mushait and the drones at Riyadh. Saudi civil defence issued overnight alerts for Khamis Mushait and Abha, but none for the capital. The coalition said it was monitoring further aerial threats without giving operational details.
The reported attacks come after a series of Houthi strikes on Saudi cities, energy facilities and Red Sea shipping. Disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has increased the importance of Red Sea routes for Gulf oil exports and recent Houthi advances along Yemen's Red Sea coast have threatened those critical energy routes.
Hours earlier, military officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Türkiye met in Riyadh to discuss regional security. Their talks followed last month’s signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, under which the three countries have agreed to mutual defence arrangements.
Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman said on Saturday that he had also met Pakistan’s CDF Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in Riyadh. The Saudi Press Agency also reported the meeting.
