Islamabad: The government has increased petrol by Rs 2.10 per litre and high speed diesel by Rs0.30, raising fuel costs for motorists and transport operators for the three days beginning Saturday.
According to the Petroleum Division’s notification, petrol will retail at Rs 392.76 per litre and diesel at Rs 399.64 from October 3 to October 5. Their previous prices were Rs 390.66 and Rs 399.34 respectively.
For consumers buying 20 litres, the revision adds Rs 42 to a petrol purchase and Rs6 to a diesel purchase. Taxes and duties remain Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 on diesel.
The increases come alongside government efforts to contain fuel consumption and provide targeted assistance. Markets are required to close by 9 pm, while fuel allocations for official vehicles have been reduced by half for three months.
A separate relief scheme announced on September 13 covers motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engines up to 800cc. At a September 29 review meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, officials reported approximately 7.60 million registrations and 7.71 million token redemptions. These are separate measures of participation and use, rather than a single beneficiary count.
Both fuels remain below their April 3 peaks, when petrol reached Rs 458.41 per litre and diesel Rs 520.35. Nevertheless, the latest increases add to household transport expenses and operating costs amid continuing instability in international energy markets.
Petrol is widely used by motorcycles, rickshaws and private cars, while diesel powers freight vehicles, heavy transport and generators, giving its price wider implications for business costs.
The government introduced daily price reviews in July in response to international volatility. The latest notification, however, explicitly fixes these rates for Saturday through Monday, giving consumers a three day pricing window.
