Islamabad: Motorists will pay less for petrol on Wednesday, but diesel users face a higher bill under the government’s latest fuel price revision, leaving different sections of the transport sector with contrasting changes in costs.
Petrol has been reduced by Rs 3.19 to Rs 376.06 per litre, while high speed diesel (HSD) has increased by Rs 2.25 to Rs 398.07. The Petroleum Division notification, reported by Dawn, sets the revised rates for October 28.
At the new prices, buying 50 litres of petrol costs Rs 159.50 less, while the same quantity of diesel costs Rs 112.50 more.
The distinction matters beyond filling stations. Petrol powers motorcycles, rickshaws and private cars, while diesel is widely used by heavy transport. Higher diesel costs can add pressure to freight expenses, although the revision does not itself establish an increase in transport fares or retail prices.
According to the report, taxes and duties remain Rs 114 per litre on petrol and Rs 100 on diesel.
The announcement followed a meeting on Tuesday between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Jamaat i Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman over the party’s demand to abolish the petroleum levy, a government charge on fuel.
Both sides agreed to establish a joint committee to consider expanding the existing relief scheme for motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc. An expansion has yet to be announced.
Rehman said his party would march to Islamabad in mid November unless substantial relief was provided.
Fuel prices have been revised daily since July 17 under a system intended to reflect international market movements. Wednesday’s petrol reduction therefore applies to the notified date and does not guarantee a sustained fall in costs.
