WASHINGTON: Pakistan has condemned Houthi attacks on merchant vessels in the Bab al-Mandab Strait and called for an immediate halt to actions threatening maritime security, as the United Nations Security Council held its second meeting on the deteriorating situation in the strategic waterway.
Speaking at a Security Council session convened by Bahrain, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, described the Houthi actions as provocative acts with severe implications for regional stability, international trade, and global supply chains.
Ambassador Asim expressed complete solidarity with Saudi Arabia, warning that Houthi aggression directly undermines the Kingdom’s security. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The meeting, held under the theme "Safe Seas, Shared Security: Protecting Freedom of Navigation in an Evolving Security Environment", followed briefings by UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari, who cautioned that volatility around Bab al-Mandab has heightened following reported Houthi advances along Yemen's western coastline and the capture of several Red Sea islands.
