Islamabad: Pakistan Air Force Day is being observed across the country today, with the nation paying tribute to the officers and airmen of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) who made sacrifices in defence of the country and reaffirming its resolve to protect Pakistan’s skies.

The day honours the service and sacrifices of PAF personnel while recognising the force’s record in safeguarding the country’s aerial frontiers. The PAF’s role in the 1965 war and its performance in Marka-e-Haq in May 2025 remain key parts of its record of military service and professional performance.

The 1965 war is a central focus of the observance, with the PAF’s pilots credited with responding to Indian air attacks despite limited resources. Their performance during the conflict has continued to be cited as an example of their operational capability and experience in aerial combat.

One of the most prominent figures associated with the 1965 air war is PAF ace Muhammad Mahmood Alam, widely known as M. M. Alam.

Alam is credited with shooting down five Indian Air Force Hawker Hunter Mk.56 in less than a minute during the conflict. The feat remains one of the best-known episodes in the history of the PAF and is recalled as part of the force’s record during the 1965 war.

The day also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the broader contribution of PAF officers and airmen who have served in the defence of the country. The observance recognises their role in maintaining the security of Pakistan’s airspace and reflects the country’s continuing emphasis on safeguarding its aerial frontiers.

The PAF’s performance in Marka-e-Haq in May 2025 is also being recalled alongside its role in the 1965 war. Together, the two episodes are presented as symbols of the force’s combat capability and professional standards.
