Nanchang: One person has been killed and 11 others remain missing after a mudslide hit a village in Suichuan County, Ji’an City, in eastern China’s Jiangxi Province early on Saturday. Local authorities confirmed the disaster occurred around 4 am following days of heavy rainfall caused by Typhoon Saudel.

Emergency teams have rescued three people from the site. Two are in stable condition, while the third was pronounced dead.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities focusing on locating the missing residents, evacuating affected villagers, and mitigating the risk of secondary hazards. Local fire and rescue departments have deployed 224 personnel and 41 vehicles to the scene, supported by communications and reconnaissance drones brought in from nearby regions.

The mudslide follows widespread disruption across Jiangxi Province, where Typhoon Saudel has affected an estimated 161,500 residents.

In response, the Jiangxi Provincial Committee for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Relief issued a Level 3 provincial emergency response for disaster relief at noon on Saturday. National authorities have also scaled up emergency measures to assist the region.

China’s Ministry of Natural Resources raised its geological disaster response level for Jiangxi from Level 4 to Level 3 at 11 am on Saturday, dispatching a specialized work team to guide on-site operations.

Simultaneously, the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management activated a Level-IV national emergency response for natural disaster relief. The national bodies sent an emergency survey team equipped with advanced monitoring technology, including slope radar, to aid local rescue teams.

China operates a four tier emergency response system, with Level 1 representing the most severe disaster classification. Search efforts at the site remain active.
