Lahore: The Punjab government has approved Rs 400 million to renovate the National Hockey Stadium and its adjoining practice pitch, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) said on Friday.
The federation said the provincial government and Sports Board Punjab approved the funding following its request to improve the venue.
The project includes installing new artificial turf, the synthetic surface used for competitive hockey, and repairing the stadium’s infrastructure and other facilities.
Training infrastructure will also be upgraded to provide players with modern facilities. The PHF said the work was intended to bring playing facilities in line with international standards and was expected to be completed by January 2027.
The stadium has a significant place in Pakistan’s hockey history. It hosted the 1990 Men’s Hockey World Cup and five editions of the Champions Trophy, held in 1978, 1988, 1994, 1998 and 2004.
The federation said the renovation aimed to strengthen hockey in Pakistan by improving facilities for players.
