Shabwa, Yemen: A Houthi attack on a government security training camp in southern Yemen killed 58 people and injured more than 200 on Monday, October 19, according to Shabwa Governor Awad al Wazir. The attack came as fighting between the group and forces supporting the internationally recognised government intensified.
The attack struck the Al Alam training camp in Shabwa province during a morning training session. Local officials said three missiles hit the facility while security personnel were in training.
Governor al Wazir said 14 people were also missing following the attack.
Initial reports from government and medical sources put the death toll at 18, but the figure rose as provincial authorities gathered information from the site and hospitals.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the strike. Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson, said the group targeted a facility operated by Saudi forces.
Yemen's internationally recognised government disputed the Houthis' description of the camp, saying it was used to train new recruits for the province's internal security forces rather than for troops engaged in frontline fighting.
Rashad al Alimi, chairman of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, condemned the attack and vowed a response.
The strike came after several weeks of renewed fighting between the Houthis and government-aligned forces.
Shabwa is an important province for producing energy on Yemen's southern coast and is home to the Balhaf liquefied natural gas facility.
