Islamabad: Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir is scheduled to visit Tehran on Tuesday, October 20, to meet with Iranian officials to discuss regional security and relations between the two neighbouring countries.
Pakistan officials confirmed the visit, while Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that Munir would meet senior Iranian officials.
The talks are expected to cover bilateral cooperation, regional development, and Pakistan's role in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the US.
The discussions are also expected to cover trade routes between Pakistan and Iran, given the two countries' proximity.
The visit comes amid tensions over the conflict involving Iran and the United States, which disrupted maritime trade and raised concerns about security across the Gulf.
Pakistan maintained diplomatic contact with both countries during the conflict, seeking to reduce tensions and encourage a negotiated settlement.
Munir's latest visit follows meetings with Iranian leaders earlier this year, when the two sides discussed preventing further escalation, restoring shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and finding a way to end the conflict.
During an August visit to Tehran, Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials.
Those discussions focused on the obstacles to renewed negotiations between Tehran and Washington, as well as measures needed to restore regional stability.
The Strait of Hormuz is an important issue for the US. The waterway links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and is a major route for international oil and gas shipments.
Restrictions and security incidents affecting shipping through the strait put increased pressure on regional governments to find a diplomatic solution.
Pakistan's position is also shaped by its relations with Iran and its security and economic partnerships with Gulf countries, making regional stability an important concern for Islamabad.
The planned talks in Tehran will give Pakistani and Iranian officials another opportunity to review these developments.
