Islamabad: Pakistan regards Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and the security of the two holy mosques as an absolute commitment, military spokesperson Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said in an interview with Independent Arabia.
The director general of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the protection of the Haramain Sharifain was paramount for Pakistan.
“Whatever support is needed to do that is being provided and will be provided,” he said.
His remarks came amid continuing Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia and growing concern over the regional conflict.
Chaudhry said collective deterrence under the Makkah pact would come into play if negotiations failed and conflict erupted. He warned that attacks on the kingdom would draw a collective response from countries participating in the pact.
According to Independent Arabia’s account of the interview, he said Pakistan was providing Saudi Arabia with necessary military support and was prepared to use all available means.
Asked about possible direct military assistance to Yemen’s government, Chaudhry said he did not know whether Pakistan had received a formal request.
He said Islamabad would examine any request submitted to it and take an appropriate decision.
His comments distinguished Pakistan’s stated commitment to Saudi security from any decision on a separate request for assistance from the Yemeni government.
