Islamabad: Deputy Prime Minister (PM) and Foreign Minister (FM) Ishaq Dar has called for power sector reforms to remain focused on consumers, as the government reviews its reform and privatisation agenda.

Dar chaired a meeting of the committee constituted by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif to review proposed reforms in the power sector, according to Radio Pakistan.

The meeting examined progress on the government’s reform and privatisation agenda, including measures aimed at strengthening institutions and building the capacity of key organisations involved in the sector.

Dar stressed that the reform process should deliver tangible benefits for electricity consumers, with greater efficiency, sustainability and improved service outcomes as key objectives.

He called for a consumer centric approach to the restructuring of the power sector, emphasising that reforms and privatisation should translate into measurable improvements rather than remain limited to institutional changes.

The deputy PM also highlighted the need for a results driven reform process, saying institutional effectiveness and the long term sustainability of the power sector should remain central to the government’s approach.

Pakistan’s power sector has faced persistent challenges linked to efficiency, financial sustainability and service delivery. The government’s reform and privatisation efforts are aimed at addressing institutional weaknesses while improving the sector’s overall performance.

The emphasis on consumer outcomes places electricity users at the centre of the reform agenda, with the effectiveness of the measures ultimately depending on whether they improve efficiency, sustainability and the quality of services.
