Rawalpindi: Construction work has officially begun on two major underpasses along Peshawar Road in Rawalpindi as part of an Rs eight billion infrastructure initiative to turn the garrison city’s key artery into a signal free corridor. Executed by the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) under the direction of the Punjab Communication and Works Department, the project focuses on two critical bottlenecks at Race Course Park and Charing Cross.

Following the completion of utility relocations including power pylons, water mains, and telecommunication lines authorities have activated newly paved service corridors linking Qasim Market to Radio Pakistan and Maryam Hospital to Rafay Mall to prevent full road closures during digging.

The underpasses represent a central component of the planned 25 kilometre signal free transit network stretching from the Islamabad Expressway to Motorway Chowk on Peshawar Road. Following earlier completions at General Post Office Chowk and Kutchery Chowk, officials estimate that the entire corridor will eventually reduce travel time across the twin cities to 15, 20 minutes. Construction is targeted for completion within two to three months under strict daily quality monitoring reporting to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
