Quetta: In a session chaired by Speaker Captain (retd) Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, the Balochistan Assembly unanimously adopted a joint resolution calling for a modern legal framework to combat acid violence. Moved by female parliamentarians including Deputy Speaker Ghazala Gola and Shaheeda Rauf, the motion strongly condemned a recent assault on Dr Mahnoor, characterising it as a grave violation of human dignity and fundamental rights.
Lawmakers highlighted the province’s lack of a dedicated statutory framework to penalise perpetrators and outlined demands for free specialised medical care, plastic surgery, psychological support, legal aid, and financial compensation for survivors, alongside tight regulations on the sale and transport of corrosive materials.
Furthermore, assembly members called for strict regulations and robust oversight mechanisms governing the purchase, sale, and transportation of acid to prevent its misuse. Following supportive speeches from across the floor, the Deputy Speaker declared the motion a joint resolution of the entire House.
Addressing the House, provincial ministers and assembly members affirmed the government's intention to introduce comprehensive legislation to eradicate acid crimes. Concurrently, Awami National Party parliamentary leader Engineer Zamrak Khan Achakzai presented a second resolution addressing the deteriorating security situation in regions such as Ziarat, Mastung, and Qilla Abdullah.
