Islamabad: The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), located in sector G-8/3, is one of the largest public tertiary healthcare and research institutions in Pakistan. Conceived in the early 1960s to cater to the growing healthcare demands of the federal capital, construction of the medical complex officially began in 1980. The outpatient department opened its doors in December 1985, followed by the commencement of inpatient services in 1986, before its formal inauguration by then Prime Minister (PM) Muhammad Khan Junejo in September 1987.

The institution operates under the direct administrative and financial jurisdiction of the federal government. Primary funding for its operations, infrastructure upgrades, and medical services is drawn from the federal budget through annual allocations in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), administered via the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. Through this government funding, the complex provides subsidised healthcare, emergency services, and specialised treatments to thousands of patients arriving daily from Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The administration of the hospital is headed by the Executive Director, Professor Dr Rana Imran Sikandar, who oversees overall clinical operations, administrative departments, and institutional management. Professor Dr Rizwan Taj is the dean of postgraduate medical training within the affiliated Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU).

Spanning a 140 acre campus, PIMS encompasses several major specialised facilities, including Islamabad Hospital, the Children’s Hospital, the Maternal and Child Health Centre and the Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Centre. The complex functions both as the primary referral centre for complex medical cases across northern Pakistan and as a major central hub for teaching and clinical research.
