Islamabad: Pakistan's main opposition parties convened their inaugural joint parliamentary meeting at the Parliament yesterday, August 24, to launch a collective strategy against what they claim is deteriorating law and order, rising inflation, and political repression as a result of filed government policies. Chaired by Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the session brought together JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, MWM head Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, and PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan, who pledged their support for a unified stance in parliament against what they claim is political oppression.
Moreover, PTI senators staged a walkout in the Senate after Deputy Chairman Syed Ali Khan Nasir disallowed a resolution on the medical condition of jailed former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, ruling the matter sub judice following objections from Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar.
The opposition subsequently pointed out a lack of quorum, forcing the Senate to adjourn until Tuesday. This aggressive parliamentary strategy directly disrupts the routine legislative business and restricts the government's ability to advance key policies without consultation, maintaining continuous public and legal focus on executive compliance regarding Imran Khan's detention conditions.
Khan's detention has become the primary focus of the PTI in and out of parliament since the former PM waws convicted and sent to Adiala Jail for a slew of cases in 2024. His supporters and party members say that the charges against him are politically motivated, but the ruling coalition says that he was convicted into a transparent and clearcut judicial process that took the case all the way to the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP).
Since then, the PTI has organised a number of rallies and marches from the KP province - where it currently runs the provincial government - to Islamabad in a series of bids to force the issue of Khan's release politically. Recently the party was able to convince the SCP to let Khan receive treatment outside the prison premises on humanitarian grounds, but the was taken back to prison almost immediately after what doctors said were brief optical and cardiac tests. The PTI has indicated in statements from its leadership that it will continue to try and pressure the government politically to force a change in these circumstances.
