Web desk: The United States (US) and China are accelerating the race to develop brain computer interfaces that could transform medicine, technology and eventually national security.
For years, brain computer interfaces (BCIs) belonged largely to the realm of science fiction. Today, they are moving into hospitals and clinical trials, allowing brain signals to be translated into commands that can control computers, robotic limbs and other devices.
The technology has become an unexpected front in the broader US China competition over emerging technologies.
The US remains home to some of the field’s best known companies, including Neuralink, Synchron, Precision Neuroscience and Paradromics. Their work ranges from restoring communication for people who have lost the ability to speak to enabling patients with paralysis to interact with digital devices.
China, however, is rapidly closing the gap, and in some areas has moved ahead in bringing BCIs into clinical use.
In March, China approved what Fudan University described as the world’s first implantable Class III BCI medical device for compensating hand motor functions. The system subsequently entered clinical use at Huashan Hospital in Shanghai in July.
Chinese researchers are also pushing the technology towards wider deployment. The Beinao 1 semi invasive BCI has entered registered clinical trials after earlier human implantations, with developers targeting broader hospital trials in 2027. The system is designed to help patients with conditions including spinal cord injuries, stroke and motor impairments communicate with or control external devices.
Beijing’s growing commitment is increasingly visible at the policy level. China’s latest five year plan for supporting emerging technology companies specifically identifies brain computer interfaces alongside robotics, quantum technology and embodied artificial intelligence as strategic sectors for development.
Washington is taking notice. The US National Security Commission on Emerging Biotechnology warned this week that China’s emerging leadership in BCIs could become a strategic risk, arguing that the technology could have applications extending from healthcare to defence and next generation AI trained on brain data.
The stakes extend beyond who can build the most advanced implant. BCIs could eventually influence how humans interact with artificial intelligence, machines and autonomous systems. The vast amounts of neural data generated by such devices also raise profound questions about privacy, consent and who controls information originating inside the human brain.
Yet the technology remains far from mature. Implant longevity, signal degradation, surgical risks, decoding accuracy and the small size of many clinical trials remain major obstacles.
The emerging US China competition therefore represents more than another technology race. The country that learns to reliably translate human neural activity into digital commands could gain an advantage at the intersection of medicine, AI and national security.
