Lucknow: A powerful explosion ripped through a firecracker unit in Kaushambi district, Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 11 people and leaving numerous others injured. The force of the blast reduced the factory building to rubble and caused the structural collapse of up to six neighboring residential houses. Superintendent of Police Satyanarayan Prajapat confirmed the fatalities, noting that several victims were admitted to local hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Local authorities reported that eight of those killed were children between the ages of four and 13 who resided in the adjacent homes.

Emergency personnel, alongside teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and nearby military support units, quickly mobilised to clear the debris with heavy machinery to rescue anyone trapped underneath. Officials confirmed that investigations have been launched to determine the precise cause of the detonation and to examine compliance with safety regulations. Initial reports suggest the operation may have been functioning illegally without a valid operational licence.

Industrial accidents and factory blazes are relatively frequent across the region, typically linked to weak safety enforcement and lax compliance. The tragic incident follows similar recent disasters in the country, including a fire at a fireworks facility in western India that claimed 17 lives in March, and a storage unit fire in the south that killed eight people the following month. Authorities have stated that strict legal proceedings will be pursued against those responsible for operating the facility.
