Wana: Authorities have restricted movement on designated roads and closed markets in parts of Upper and Lower South Waziristan for Saturday, citing security concerns during the transportation of logistical supplies for security forces.
Lower South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Musarrat Zaman and Upper South Waziristan Deputy Commissioner Irfan Ali issued separate Section 144 notifications on Friday evening, Dawn reported.
The orders affect specified localities and routes. Residents needing to travel in an emergency must obtain permission from police or security forces before entering restricted areas.
In Lower South Waziristan, the restrictions cover Wana Bazaar, the Wana Bypass and routes passing through Wana, Tiarza Gate, Karab Kot, Tanai, Azizabad Chowk and Dargai Bridge. Access to roads connecting Gul Kach with Toi Khullah and Tanai is also prohibited under the notification.
Motorists have been instructed to stop at least 50 metres away upon seeing security forces and follow official directions.
In Upper South Waziristan, the order covers Servekai and Sararogha tehsils and adjoining areas, including the closure of markets and commercial centres.
Restricted routes include those leading to Ladha, Makeen, Sararogha, Nazar Khel, Dargai Bridge, Madi Jan, Sheen Warsak and Jandola. Roads through Servekai, Moley Khan Sarai, Barwand, Asman Manza and Torwam are also affected.
The Upper South Waziristan notification requires motorists to stop at least 50 metres from security forces and all occupants to leave their vehicles. Emergency passage is subject to authorisation and verification of identity documents.
Polio workers and vaccination teams have been given a specific exemption in Upper South Waziristan, allowing them to move after establishing their identities.
Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure allows temporary written restrictions to address an anticipated danger, protect public safety or prevent disturbances. The particular notification determines which activities and places are covered; the provision does not automatically impose identical restrictions wherever it is invoked.
For residents, the immediate requirement is to check whether their journey crosses a designated route and seek permission before emergency travel. The reported orders apply to Saturday, October 24; no extension was specified in the account.
