Riyadh: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper to discuss the latest regional developments, Saudi state television reported, as attacks by Houthis against the kingdom escalate.
The meeting comes as tensions across the Middle East remain high, with Saudi Arabia facing renewed security concerns linked to Houthi attacks. The group has previously targeted Saudi territory and infrastructure as part of the wider regional conflict.
Saudi Arabia and the United States (US) have longstanding defence and security ties, including cooperation on regional threats and the protection of strategic infrastructure and maritime routes.
The talks also come against the backdrop of growing concerns over freedom of navigation in the region. Disruptions around the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz have heightened international attention on the security of vital shipping and energy corridors.
Admiral Cooper heads US Central Command, which oversees American military operations across a region stretching from the Middle East to Central and South Asia. His meeting with the Saudi crown prince highlights the security dimension of the two countries’ relationship at a time of heightened regional instability.
