Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a special relief scheme offering Rs100 per litre petrol relief to motorcycle users, rickshaw and Qingqi owners, and people using small vehicles with engines of up to 800cc.

The scheme comes as rising global oil prices continue to put pressure on fuel costs. Petrol is currently being sold at Rs375.82 per litre after the latest increase, according to Geo News.

Under the new scheme, motorcycle, rickshaw, Qingqi and other two- and three-wheeler users will receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month.

Owners of vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc will receive the same Rs100 per litre relief on up to 30 litres of petrol each month.

When will the petrol relief scheme start?

The government has already opened registration for the special relief scheme.

In Islamabad, the scheme will be implemented from the night between Monday and Tuesday. The relief will then be rolled out across the rest of Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

The government said an awareness campaign will provide the public with details about the registration process.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also thanked the provincial governments for helping provide information about motorcycles, rickshaws and small vehicles to support registration for the scheme.

The prime minister said the government understands the pressure caused by rising fuel prices and that the special scheme was being introduced to reduce the burden on people using motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqis and small vehicles.
