Islamabad: Pakistan and Japan have signed agreements for a USD 16.4 million grant to support a flood protection and dike improvement project along the Indus River in Sindh province.
The agreements cover the “Project for Flood Protection and Dike Improvement on Indus River in Sindh Province”, which is aimed at strengthening flood protection infrastructure and improving the resilience of communities vulnerable to flooding in the province.
The Exchange of Notes and Record of Discussion were signed and exchanged in Islamabad by Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim Kidwai and Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Akamatsu Shuichi.
The Grant Agreement was signed by Additional Secretary Sabina Qureshi and Senior Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Pakistan Sugawara Takayuki.
Under the agreement, Japan will provide a grant of about USD 16.4 million for implementation of the project.
The project will focus on improving and strengthening the Old Abad Bund in the Larkana area of Sindh province. The bund is located along the right bank of the Indus River.
The initiative is intended to strengthen flood protection infrastructure in the area and support the protection of communities vulnerable to flooding.
The signing of the Exchange of Notes, Record of Discussion and Grant Agreement formally sets out the arrangements for implementing the project, including the Japanese grant support.
The project forms part of cooperation between Pakistan and Japan in infrastructure and development assistance, with the grant directed towards flood protection measures in Sindh.
The agreements were signed in Islamabad by representatives of the governments of Pakistan and Japan, along with the JICA representative, completing the formal arrangements for the project’s implementation.
