Rawalpindi: Pakistan and Brazil agreed on Monday to strengthen military cooperation during a meeting between Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and a visiting Brazilian delegation, according to Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR).
Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of Brazil’s Armed Forces, led the delegation to General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
ISPR said the military leaders discussed regional security, matters of mutual interest and opportunities to expand bilateral defence and security cooperation.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the longstanding cordial relationship between Pakistan and Brazil and agreed to strengthen cooperation between their armed forces, the statement said.
Munir said Pakistan was committed to strengthening defence ties with Brazil.
While Freire praised the professionalism and operational preparedness of Pakistan’s armed forces and acknowledged their contributions to regional peace and stability.
The statement described the visit as reflecting a shared commitment to closer defence cooperation. It did not announce a specific agreement or provide details of proposed joint activities.
A contingent representing Pakistan’s three armed services presented a guard of honour to the visiting admiral on his arrival at GHQ.
The military engagement follows earlier efforts to expand relations in other areas, including trade and investment.
In 2018, Brazil’s then ambassador to Pakistan, Claudio Raja Gabaglia Lins, visited the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Peshawar. During that engagement, the two sides agreed on steps to increase bilateral trade and establish a joint chamber to facilitate businesspeople and investors.
Monday’s meeting focused on defence and security relations, with both military leaders agreeing to pursue closer collaboration.
