Netflix has announced a Stranger Things prequel that moves the story out of Hawkins, Indiana, and back to 1955. Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure will premiere in 2028, Netflix said on Friday, Stranger Things Day. No exact date has been given.
Netflix’s teaser shows the date 19 April 1955 and the place, Marion, Nevada. The footage is brief and reveals no plot. Netflix’s caption, as reported, was “Before Hawkins, there was Marion.”
The 1955 setting places the series before the original show and before the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which is set in 1959. Netflix has not said how, or whether, the new story connects to Henry Creel, the play’s central character.
Matt and Ross Duffer, who created the original series, are co creators and executive producers. Kate Trefry, who has written for the show since its second season and wrote The First Shadow, is showrunner. Joe Wright, director of Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes. Production will take place in New Mexico, according to the announcement as reported by The National. Casting has not been announced.
The Duffers said the series has a new setting, new heroes and new villains, and that they could not say more yet.
