Islamabad: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Assembly passed a majority resolution on Friday, September 11, 2026, demanding legal action under Article 6 of the Constitution (high treason) against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The resolution, introduced by Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam Afridi after suspending the day's regular business, followed controversy over her recent remarks alleging that Punjab faces greater security threats from "neighbouring provinces than neighbouring countries" and that terrorism enters Punjab via its provincial borders.

Lawmakers across the treasury benches, alongside representatives from the Awami National Party (ANP), strongly condemned the remarks, labelling them an insult to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan and arguing that such statements harm federal unity and contradict Pakistan's long standing diplomatic narrative regarding cross border terrorism.

In response, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML N) legislator Amna Sardar defended the Chief Minister, stating that Maryam Nawaz had never mentioned Pakhtuns and claiming her comments were being misread, distorted, and politicised by the treasury benches.
