Peshawar: Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema Islam Fazl, or JUI F, has issued show cause notices directing its members serving on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s advisory council to resign within three days.
According to the party’s provincial spokesperson, its provincial executive committee rejected the federal government’s imposition of governor’s rule and the emergency, describing the measures as undemocratic and a negation of democracy. The meeting also rejected the establishment of the advisory council.
The spokesperson said the provincial party chief had issued notices to members who had not yet resigned from the council. Their party membership would be considered suspended if they failed to step down within three days.
The meeting also expressed concern over the information adviser’s remarks about religious seminaries. Participants said linking seminaries to terrorism was contrary to the facts and regrettable.
The party said seminaries were centres of peace, compassion and tolerance and had supported the state against terrorism. It added that hundreds of religious scholars had themselves lost their lives to terrorist violence.
Participants described the adviser’s statement as irresponsible and urged greater restraint and regard for facts when discussing national affairs. They said the remarks had caused anger among seminaries and religious circles and characterised them as an attempt to undermine the sacrifices of those killed in terrorism.
The executive committee also expressed concern over what it described as a social media campaign targeting JUI F and Fazlur Rehman. The party alleged that certain groups and paid vloggers were involved.
Participants said false narratives could not discredit Fazlur Rehman or the party’s role.
