Tehran: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday that it had carried out combined missile and drone attacks on US military bases in Erbil, Iraq, as Tehran widened its retaliation against American forces in the region.
The IRGC claimed the attacks targeted US military facilities in Erbil, but there was no immediate official confirmation from US or Iraqi authorities. Reports of an explosion in Erbil emerged separately amid the latest wave of Iranian attacks.
The reported attack came after the United States launched a fresh wave of strikes on Iranian military targets, including IRGC air defence sites, radar systems, maritime assets and mine-laying capabilities.
Iran has since launched missile and drone attacks against US-linked positions across the region, including in Jordan, Bahrain and Kuwait, marking a sharp expansion of the latest confrontation between Tehran and Washington.
A senior Iranian lawmaker warned on Wednesday that the United States would face a severe response after accusing Washington of striking a wedding gathering in southern Iran and killing or wounding civilians.
Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran's parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said the alleged attack on a wedding in Kuhestak was evidence of what he called the “utter desperation” of the United States and a repeat of earlier US attacks in Minab and Lamerd.
“Targeting a wedding and slaughtering innocent civilians in Kuhestak, Iran, is the ultimate proof of the utter desperation of the fake defenders of human rights,” Azizi said in a post on X.
“Make no mistake: these crimes will not go unpunished. Nothing will protect them from the crushing will of Iran’s Armed Forces,” he added.
Iranian officials have said the US strike hit a residential home in Kuhestak, in Hormozgan province, while a wedding was taking place there.
