Tehran: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday that its air defence forces intercepted and destroyed another United States MQ1 drone east of the Strait of Hormuz, as regional mediators intensified efforts to revive negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
According to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV, an advanced air defence system brought down the drone near the strategically important waterway.
The IRGC did not provide further details about the drone’s mission, the exact location of the interception, or the circumstances behind the incident.
US authorities did not immediately confirm the reported loss.
The announcement follows earlier Iranian claims of intercepting American drones near the Strait of Hormuz amid months of military confrontation with the United States.
Iran signals willingness to continue diplomatic efforts
The latest development comes as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that Tehran remained in contact with international mediators regarding proposals to reduce tensions and implement a possible peace arrangement.
In a statement on Wednesday, Araghchi said Iran's armed forces remained prepared to defend the country while the government continued to explore diplomatic options.
"Iran continues to give diplomacy a chance to succeed," he said.
He added that Tehran was maintaining close contact with intermediaries to examine proposals that could facilitate the implementation of Iran's seven day peace plan.
Iran indicated that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within days if its conditions are accepted, although major disagreements remain over sanctions, the US naval blockade and Tehran's nuclear programme.
Strait of Hormuz remains central to the dispute
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime routes for oil and gas shipments, linking the Persian Gulf to international markets.
The reported interception of another American drone highlights the continuing military tensions surrounding the strait, even as diplomatic discussions remain active.
With Iran and the United States maintaining different conditions for a settlement, it remains uncertain whether the latest proposals will lead to an agreement or prevent further confrontation.
