Gujranwala: A newlywed woman was killed in Gujranwala on Saturday, October 24, while returning home with her husband after their walima reception, allegedly by a man whose marriage proposal she previously rejected.
The victim was a resident of New Gulshan Colony and married on October 23. They held their walima reception the following day at a marriage hall near Shalimar Town on GT Road.
According to police, the couple were travelling home when two men on a motorcycle intercepted their car near Samanabad Chungi.
One of the suspects allegedly approached the vehicle and attacked the victim. She was taken to Gujranwala Teaching Hospital, where she later died.
Police said the suspects escaped following the incident.
The Crime Control Department (CCD) registered a murder case on the complaint of the victim’s brother.
Police named three suspects in the case.
Rejected marriage proposal under investigation
Investigators said the suspect met the victim at a colleague’s residence and subsequently approached her family with a marriage proposal.
The proposal was rejected, and police suspect the refusal was connected to the attack.
The complainant also alleged that the colleague attended the victim’s walima reception.
Investigators are examining whether the suspects coordinated the attack and what role, if any, each nominated individual played.
CCTV footage and police investigation
CCTV footage shows two motorcycle riders approaching the couple's vehicle and stopping it.
The footage is expected to help investigators identify and trace those involved.
Police and Punjab Forensic Science Agency personnel visited the scene to collect evidence, while the hospital conducted a post mortem examination.
The case was registered under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, including those relating to murder, abetment and common intention.
The killing brought renewed attention to violence against women following the rejection of marriage proposals.
The allegations against the nominated suspects remain subject to investigation. Police did not announce any convictions, and available reports indicate that efforts to arrest the suspects are ongoing.
