Karachi: Police have arrested five suspects, including a son of Lyari gang war figure Baba Ladla, in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of a teenager in Karachi's Lyari neighbourhood.
The arrests followed the circulation of a video on social media showing the victim being restrained and assaulted by several individuals. The footage was also broadcast by Express News.
According to police, the incident took place on October 11 in Phool Patti Lane, Lyari, while a case was registered at Baghdadi police station on October 14.
The first information report (FIR) was lodged on the complaint of the victim's maternal uncle, Kabir Ahmed, under provisions relating to attempted murder, abduction and assault.
In his complaint, Ahmed stated that his nephew, Ghulam Nabi, a Class VIII student aged approximately 17 or 18, returned home on October 11 in a distressed condition with visible signs of assault.
According to the FIR, the teenager was travelling towards Lyari General Hospital for work when he was allegedly intercepted by seven individuals near Dongi Chowk.
The suspects named in the complaint include Sharif and Arshad, sons of Baba Ladla, along with Uzair, Faraz, Ali, Ghazanfar Ali and Shahzaib.
The complainant alleged that the suspects had been involved in a dispute with the victim approximately two months before the incident.
The FIR states that the suspects allegedly took the teenager to a room, restrained him and subjected him to physical assault while recording the incident on a mobile phone.
The victim also alleged that one suspect threatened him with a firearm and discharged a shot that did not strike him after another individual intervened.
According to the complaint, the suspects eventually released the teenager but warned him against returning to the area.
The circulation of the video prompted concerns about the possible return of gang related intimidation in Lyari, an area that has previously experienced violence involving criminal groups.
However, police officials said the incident appeared to have resulted from a dispute between young men rather than a confrontation involving organised gang war groups.
Five suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the case. The allegations remain subject to investigation, and the suspects have not been convicted.
Police have not provided further details about the status of the remaining individuals named in the complaint.
