Dhaka: Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud said on Monday that his team could challenge for a place in the World Test Championship final, pointing to improving results and the emergence of a stronger pace attack.
Speaking to AFP, the 26 year old said Bangladesh’s nine wicket victory over Australia in Darwin in August had strengthened the team’s belief.
“The momentum is coming towards us, definitely,” Hasan said. “We haven’t dominated in Test cricket. Now is the time.”
Bangladesh are fourth in the championship standings after winning six of their 13 Tests over the past two years. The World Test Championship is a competition in which results across designated Test series determine which two teams reach the final.
Bangladesh have six matches remaining in the current cycle, with home series against the West Indies and England and an away series in South Africa.
“If we win four matches at home, why shouldn’t we play in the World Test Championship final? That’s the dream for Bangladesh now,” Hasan said.
He took six wickets for 55 runs in Darwin, helping Bangladesh secure a landmark victory. However, Australia won the second Test in Mackay by an innings and 51 runs, leaving the two match series level.
Hasan, who also played county cricket for Kent this year, said Bangladesh’s emerging fast bowlers were changing perceptions of the team.
Nicknamed “Mini McGrath” after former Australian paceman Glenn McGrath, Hasan said his approach against Australia centred on sustained pressure and denying batters easy scoring opportunities.
He expressed confidence that Bangladesh could improve further, provided their fast bowlers remained fit and their batters maintained form.
The final remains an ambition rather than a secured place, with the team’s remaining results central to its chances.
