South Waziristan: One resident was killed and five members of a family were injured in firing from Afghan territory near Angoor Adda on Tuesday, according to officials cited by Dawn.
Officials said Afghan security forces opened unprovoked fire on Pakistan Army border posts and nearby residential areas, using sniper fire and small and heavy weapons. The five injured family members were inside a house struck by a mortar.
Pakistani security forces responded by targeting Afghan Taliban border positions, according to sources quoted in the report. They said the response involved small and heavy weapons, including artillery, and targeted posts, mortar positions and defensive bunkers.
The sources claimed that Afghan Taliban personnel abandoned their positions during the exchange and that Pakistani forces retained control of the border area. The report did not provide independent verification of those battlefield claims or details of casualties on the Afghan side.
Angoor Adda is an important crossing for trade and civilian movement between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Firing around the crossing places nearby communities at risk because homes and routes used for everyday travel are close to military positions.
The civilian casualties highlight the dangers facing residents during exchanges along the border. The report did not identify those killed or injured, describe the condition of the wounded or confirm whether movement through the crossing had been suspended.
