Peshawar: The federal government has constituted an 11 member advisory council to assist Governor Faisal Karim Kundi in administering Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule on Sunday.
The council comprises Tariq Mahmood Pasha, Dr Amir Abdullah, Lieutenant General (retd) Nigar Johar, Samar Bilour, Dr Sarfaraz Ali, Aamir Javed, Dr M Irshad, Kifayatullah, Tayyab Qureshi, Usman Saifullah Khan and Asif Rafiq.
The council held its first meeting at Governor House under Kundi’s chairmanship. Inspector General of Police Zulfiqar Hameed briefed members on the province’s law and order situation.
Kundi acknowledged the challenges facing the new administration and called for responsible and timely decisions. He said its priorities would include restoring peace, strengthening security and promoting stability and development.
The governor said corruption would not be tolerated and identified stronger police and Counter Terrorism Department capacity as a priority.
He also called for dismantling the support networks sustaining terrorism, including financing, facilitation, recruitment and extremist networks, alongside action against illegal weapons, drugs and unlawful movement.
Kundi stressed the need to implement the National Action Plan and other counterterrorism measures, noting that the province’s losses to terrorism extended across security personnel, government employees and civilian communities.
A subsequent security meeting brought together council members, senior administrative officials, police, counterterrorism officers and intelligence representatives. Participants pledged to improve law enforcement agencies’ operational capacity.
The governor said he and the advisory council would remain available to support police and security forces.
The council’s formation followed the suspension of the provincial government under the presidential proclamation issued on October 11. It will assist the governor as he assumes responsibility for provincial administration.
