Moscow: United States' (UN) special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on proposals aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.
The meeting, held on Saturday, lasted around three hours and focused on what the White House described as substantive plans for the next steps towards ending the conflict.
A White House official said the discussions involved proposals for peace and that further details could be announced in the coming weeks. Witkoff and Kushner are due to meet Ukrainian officials in Kyiv as part of the diplomatic effort.
The Kremlin described the talks as substantive and constructive, saying Putin reaffirmed Russia's willingness to work with the US towards a political and diplomatic solution.
However, major differences remain between Moscow and Kyiv.
Ahead of the Moscow meeting, Russia announced a 72 hour pause in strikes on Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also said Ukraine would not target Moscow with drones or missiles during the US envoys' visit and called on Russia to reciprocate.
The talks mark another attempt by Washington to bridge differences between the two sides after previous diplomatic efforts failed to produce a lasting ceasefire.
The envoys' planned discussions in Kyiv could provide further indications of whether the latest proposals can narrow the gap between Russian demands and Ukrainian conditions for peace.
