Islamabad: Kashmiri delegates participating in the 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) have drawn attention to the human rights situation in Indian-controlled Kashmir, calling for immediate international intervention.
Speaking at the session, delegates including Ms Shamim Shawl, Ms Mehr un Nisa, Dr Shugufta Ashraf, and Dr Sajjad Khan urged the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to intensify monitoring of the region. They called for impartial scrutiny of alleged violations and demanded that India adhere to due process and uphold accountability.
During their addresses, the delegates expressed deep concern over ongoing intimidation targeting human rights defenders, specifically naming activist Khurram Parvez, as well as political activists across the region. They also highlighted widespread arbitrary detentions and persistent restrictions on freedom of expression.
According to figures cited by the delegates, more than 3,000 Kashmiris had been taken into custody by August 2026. They further reported severe overcrowding in local detention facilities, noting that prisons in the region currently hold 5,300 inmates despite having a combined capacity of only 3,600.
The statements were reported by the Kashmir Media Service. The delegates reiterated their call for prompt action from the global community to address these rights concerns and ensure the protection of fundamental freedoms in the territory.
